Program Notes

Any child of the 80s will recognize sounds harkening back to the 8-bit gaming of their childhood in In the Distance. However, that modern-day rendering of vintage synthesizers quickly involves into the heavy bass and syncopated rhythms of dubstep, an electronic dance music that originated in London in the late 1990s, combined with the sounds of trance, an electronic style of music that developed in Germany in the 1990s.

Performance Notes

In the Distance is a grade 0.5 work of any combination of instruments, including winds, strings and mallet percussion, with snare drum and fixed media. This piece employs only the first five notes learned on traditional band instruments. It can be performed with as few as three players, and parts are entirely adaptable. I encourage you to adapt this piece and each part for your ensemble, which will allow for a truly unique performance. Percussion students may either perform the mallet part on a keyboard instrument or perform the snare part on a practice pad or snare drum.
