Program Notes

Few genres of music adapt to concert band writing as effectively as hymn tunes, and this setting is a glowing example. This very musical concert work is based on the hymn 'Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus with enhancing material added for transitions and unity. Beautifully written in the style of a classic hymn song setting for band, it's a remarkably musical setting that embraces the style and deserves a special place in the repertoire.

'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus is a Christian hymn with music by William J. Kirkpatrick and lyrics by Louisa M. R. Stead. The lyrics were written in 1882. They appeared in Stead's Songs of Triumph. The song is included in many hymnals and has been recorded by many artists.
