Program Notes

In Memoriam is dedicated to the memory of Walter Beeler, legendary director of the Ithaca College Concert Band. Beeler taught at Ithaca College for thirty-five years and as very active in commissioning new works for the wind band movement. In addition, he published 200 method books, arrangements, and transcription during his lifetime. Interestingly Beeler conducted several of Hartley's compositions and commissioned him to write a saxophone concerto Because of these efforts, he Walter Beeler Memorial Composition Prize was established to commemorate Beeler s commitment to encourage great composers to write music for wind band.

Hartley wrote In Memoriam as "a tribute to the memory of a man who as a band director and music educator make many contributions to American musical life." These two quotations from the Bible are inscribed in the score:

"O Lord, in thee have I trusted; let me never be confounded."
"Lord lettest Thou thy servant depart in peace."

Hartley uses one of his own compositions as source material for the piece. He quotes several passages from his Canticles for Voices and Wind Ensemble, among them the main chorale these, the Gloria section from the Nunc Dimittis, and the motto-theme from the Te Deum.
