Program Notes

Premiered by his own Carmel (Ind.) High School Band at the 2006 Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Richard Saucedo's stunningly beautiful hymn is a tribute to his alma mater (Indiana University) and dedicated to his former band director, Ray Cramer. The Hymn is named for the school colors associated with Indiana University.

Opening and closing with a haunting and chant-like flugelhorn solo, this work features rich harmonies, creative use of mixed meters, and chorale-like textures all combined in a marvelously effect setting.

Hymn for the Cream and Crimson is named for the school colors associated with Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. I attended Indiana during the late 1970s and it was during that time that I had the pleasure of working with the truly great conductor, musician, teacher and mentor, Dr. Ray Cramer.

What I remember most about Dr. Cramer is his passion, his passion for teaching and his passion for music. But most especially, I remember his passion for Indiana University. Of the many things I learned from Dr, Cramer, the most important lesson was that of giving your all and being passionate about music and about life.

Although I will never be able to truly repay Dr. Cramer for all that he has taught me, I hope that this piece, through the chord structures and hymn-like melody, he will hear a hint of some of that passion that every student who studies with him can't help but take away.
