Program Notes

The composer has chosen to join two of his previous choral compositions to produce a work of elegant beauty. In these two pieces the common thread is a compelling modality filled with mystical, melodic simplicity. The rich luster of the composition unfolds through fluid phrases and changes of texture. The gorgeous, broad themes of the Hymn features the woodwinds prominently, with the brass interjecting with moments of raw power. The Pavane is ushered in by a colorful saxophone solo, and offers a fine contrast to the Hymn.
