Program Notes

This festival fanfare is scored for brass and percussion. Its inspiration comes from a trip that I took on a city bus in Jerusalem in 1968 at precisely 12 noon. At that time, the driver broadcasts the “Chadashot”, the noon news for all the passengers to hear. The dotted motto la-do-sol, mi re do sol is used as its theme. Not only does every Israeli instantly recognize this call to listen to the always urgent news, but it is also known as the tropal biblical melody for chanting the first line of the Torah - “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” What a dynamic combination of past, present, and future in one musical motto! I later used it when I composed synagogue music for opening the Ark and presenting the Torah before its weekly reading.

I’d like to suggest that Eastman and all its exceptionally fine teachers (including Professor Samuel Adler, who I still study with now for more than fifty years ), have been my musical Torah. I salute my Alma Mater which awarded me a Ph.D. in composition in 1979, and wish it all of life’s best for its continued example and fine model for superb music education. I also am grateful to Professor Mark Scatterday and the concert ensemble for allowing me to retether my cherished musical ties. hope you enjoy this work.
