Program Notes

Heritage is a work that musically evokes moods, events, and sounds (including West African drumming and indigenous melodies) from an ethnomusicological research visit to Nigeria. One of the primary musical themes in the composition is an adaptation of a song that comes from the Esan people, a small ethnic group in the southern part of Nigeria and the tribe of which I am a part and have deep historical and family ties: my heritage. The Esan language is poetic in nature. At various moments of this composition, the musicians chant the text of the quoted Esan song:

Ekine leleyea do obhimen la doeki nalo.

Translation: My investment in you has paid off. Because of your hard work, your future is bright.
