Program Notes

Using the centuries-old form of passacaglia (slow dance with a ground bas of four measures), Broege here creates a delightful, inherently musical setting for young band as only he could create. Green Passacaglia is "green" because the music grows organically from a simple four-measure melody for the alto saxophone to a rich texture for the entire ensemble.

- Program Note from publisher

Green Passacaglia, written in 2005, came to Broege while he was taking a walk one afternoon thinking about writing a work for younger level bands. He believes that a younger-level work should be locked into a predetermined form to allow the conductor to use the form as a launching pad for a teaching moment – in this particular case o this work, the ground bass of the passacaglia.

As with all passacaglias, this work is a set of variations on the main theme.
