Sam Pilafian’s and Patrick Sheridan’s Grappling is a work for solo tuba and concert band in three movements: Minor Swing, Ballad and Presto, with each movement bridged by two separate solo cadenzas. The homophonous title (e.g., “grappling”) was inspired by the composers’ favorite jazz artists, Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, co-founders of the Quintette du Hot Club de France. It was written for the Iowa State University Wind Ensemble and conductor, Michael Golemo, on the occasion of the 2011 Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma Midwest District Convention.
The first movement derives its title, Minor Swing, and its Bohemian character from the 1937 tune of the same name, by Grappelli and Reinhardt. The second movement is an homage to Reinhardt’s 1940 instrumental classic Nuages. The final section is a wild romp based on the composers’ favorite early jazz standard, Tiger Rag.
Tuba soloists Pilafian and Sheridan have performed together for many years, internationally, in the creative collective, The Big Bottom Band, presenting distinct, improvised performances. Their work has afforded Sam Pilafian and Patrick Sheridan the liberty to collaborate on the creation of several works for orchestra, concert band, marching band, drum corps, chamber ensemble and virtuoso performance. Their compositions have been featured at past Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinics, the American Bandmasters Association Convention, the Kappa Kappa Psi National Convention and the BOA National Concert Band Festival, among others. Most recently, Pilafian and Sheridan have written for the United States Air Force Band, the Boston Brass, the All Star Brass, the UCLA Wind Ensemble, and the Fodens Brass Band.
