Program Notes

A very entertaining presentation of Debussy’s cultural curiosity for piano. Voicings and doubling can be varied to enhance dynamics and melodic color, as well as create solo opportunities. Delightful, but not demanding.

- Program Note from publisher

The Children’s Corner Suite was first published for piano, and later scored for orchestra by Debussy's friend André Caplet. The last movement of the suite is Golliwog’s Cakewalk, a piece in ragtime style with syncopation and rag-time effects. At that time, golliwogs were in great fashion. These were stuffed black dolls with red pants, red bow ties, and wild hair, reminding one of the black-faced minstrels of the time. A cakewalk is a dance or a strut, and the dancer with the most elaborate steps won a cake.
