Program Notes

This original composition by master composer Alfred Reed is written at a much easier grade level than most of his pieces. It contains all of Dr. Reed’s musical magic while being a little more accessible by younger concert bands.

The Golden Year was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Yokohama Kounan Junior High School Band for its Golden Anniversary, 1997.

Program Note from publisher

The Golden Year was commissioned by the Yokohama Kounan Junior High School Band in Japan in honor of the 50-year anniversary of the founding of the school and band that has been a part of the institution since its beginning. The piece debuted in 1997, under the direction of the composer, as part of the commemorative anniversary program.

The piece opens with a majestic theme in the brass to signify the ceremony itself. The second theme, a long lyrical line set over a highly charged rhythmic accompaniment, depicts the bustle and excitement of a celebration. A solo horn plays a more lyrical rendition of the opening theme, and the final section brings the whole piece together in conclusion of the celebratory 50 years of the Yokohama Kounan band.
