Program Notes

Golden Gate pays homage to the city of San Francisco in the form of a three-movement tone poem. The brassy fanfares of the first movement, The Bridge, evoke the steely strength and grandeur of the Golden Gate Bridge. Movement two, Ships in the Fog, is a misty nocturne that features solos for flute and tuba. Barbary Coast, movement three, recalls the energy and illicit activity of San Francisco’s red-light district which arose as an entrepreneurial response to the Gold Rush era and later matured as an entertainment district with dance halls and jazz clubs. The fanfare motive of the first movement is recalled in Barbary Coast and then transformed into a jazz-inspired clarinet solo. The diverse percussion instruments of the third movement include castanets, sandpaper blocks, and a cuica, a type of friction drum that makes an odd grunting sound.

Golden Gate was commissioned by the University of New Mexico Wind Symphony and its conductor, Eric Rombach-Kendall, who organized a consortium of ten ensembles from eight states to support the project. The goal of the composer was to create a work that would be appropriate for high school students while maintaining the composer’s unique voice.
