Program Notes

Davis's arranging experience, his love of travel, and his interest in folk music are all obvious in this setting of five folk and patriotic songs. The "shire" refers to a district in England similar to a county in the United States, and the "sea" refers to the long history of sailing ships, so vital in the development of the British Isles. The work is divided into three short movements of moderate. Slow and march tempos. Included are 1) Robin and the Tanner and Fanny Blair, 2) the slow ballad Barbara Allen, and 3) The Coasts of High Barbary and Rule Britannia.
