Program Notes

David Gorham incorporates this work as a tone poem to describe a young Gypsy girl. An air of mystery and intrigue weaves its way throughout the musical fabric of this piece. The simple beauty of the opening melodic material is combined with more complex elements as if a story was unfolding before you. Fascinating as well as exotic, it can provide a spooky element not usually found in works at this level. Gorham asks the ensemble to imagine what this girl might look like. The more distraught descriptions more closely relate to Gorham’s intention. In the end, the imagination of this work is in the eye of the ensemble.
