Program Notes

Fortress Variations was inspired by a concert. I had the great pleasure of hearing Timothy Mahr and the St. Olaf Band play at a Tulsa church during a recent tour. I was impressed by the great Lutheran tradition of sacred music as I took in the wonderful sounds of that evening. Later, I was thrilled to be able to premiere this piece on the same stage of the same church.

Throughout this piece, strains and themes can be heard of the original hymn, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. The opening fanfare offers an optimistic statement of hope and strength. Later, the turbulent middle section of this work depicts a mighty structure, standing strong in the heat of battle. And finally, the last section brings the sounds of triumph, heroism and victory.
