Program Notes

In Greek and Roman mythology, Vulcan was the god of fire and metal working. The Forge of Vulcan musically describes the moods and sounds of an imaginary workplace of this ancient blacksmith.

This powerful, exciting work has a relentless rhythmic drive that keeps hammering away at you Drummers will just love this one, especially with the unique use of metal trash cans to evoke the power of the ancient blacksmith. Lots of changing meters add variety, and the dark textures and moods create an aura of mythology.

This version adapted for the Flex-Band format allows small or incomplete ensembles the opportunity to enjoy this exciting piece.
