Program Notes
In Greek and Roman mythology, Vulcan was the god of fire and metal working. The Forge of Vulcan musically describes the moods and sounds of an imaginary workplace of this ancient blacksmith. To perform this piece, a minimum of 2 medium or large size aluminum trash cans is required. Remove the lids and turn the cans upside down. For better sound projection, use small blocks of wood to elevate the entire can (or at least the side facing front) a few inches off the floor. Play on the bottoms of the cans with the butt end of snare sticks. The trash can "part" appears in both Percussion 1 and Percussion 2. For maximum effect, use a total of 4 cans (or more) and spread the cans out across the back of the band. In performance, the rhythmic clarity and uniformity of this part is absolutely essential.
