Program Notes

This tribute to folk songs features the traditional sound of a British-style march in the original Celebration March, and two revered folk songs: the beautifully scored and emotional Skye Boat Song and the rousing Tarantella Napoletana.

- Program adapted Note from publisher

This piece was commissioned as a surprise gift to a retiring, incredibly supportive middle school principal. The directors and students wanted to honor her and thank her for demo[Nancy] nstrating her support of the arts throughout her career. Mrs. Iatesta was as proud of her Irish and Italian heritage as much as she was proud of her staff and students. With that in mind, two traditional folk songs are featured -- The Skye Boat Song from Ireland and Tarantella Napoletana from Italy.

The opening selection, Celebration March, is an original British-style march with a theme that comes back in the final strain of the tarantella, woven into the trumpet part, leading to the final, exciting conclusion. The first performance and dedication were a complete surprise for Mrs. Iatesta, and she felt the energy and pride of the students and staff!
