Program Notes
Flood! is a musical reaction to the historic Iowa floods of 2008. As I sat safely in my Dubuque home, listening to my sump-pump bilge water from my basement, I watched the news, which was running twenty-four hours a day, of my neighbors who were not so fortunate. I had lived in Iowa City in 1993 during the, then, “Great Flood of 1993” and although I did not experience river flooding in my basement apartment, I did experience continual serious ground water flooding. I literally walked over sandbags protecting my possessions in my bedroom from the flooding in the rest of the apartment. It was a frustrating time, and, yet, I was grateful that I did not have to endure the devastating losses that others had.
It is such a feeling of helplessness, frustration and fear to endure a natural disaster of this magnitude. Yet, there is a fascination with the power and destructive force of nature. Watching this enormous force of water move through buildings, towns, over bridges and roads brings forth the realization of the awesome power of nature and the impermanence of human endeavors.
In Iowa, disasters tend to bring about the best in people. People pull together to help each other sandbag and rebuild. Volunteers spend countless hours helping their neighbors and working for the common good............a role model for all situations, good and bad.
Flood! makes extensive use of the Znamenny Vespers Chant, Lord, I Call (Tone I).
