Program Notes
First One is a fanfare for young band. The title is a play on words in that a fanfare is usually the “first one” on the program and that this piece is written for young band; hence, it will be one of the young musicians “first ones” or first pieces.
The work is designed as an opener for a first or second year concert. A second year band could use the work as a "recruitment" performance piece for first year students. The work is in Bb Major and in ABA form. The fanfare theme is introduced in the trumpets and then taken up in the other instruments in imitation. The flute, oboe and clarinet are introduced to simple trills. Appropriate doublings allow for reinforcement of musical lines.
