Program Notes

In memory of Doris D. Stamp, 1922-2014

- Program Note from score

This creative work was written in memory of the composer's mother. As a child, he was fascinated by the music box that sat on her dresser. When the lid was removed, it would play Cole Porter's Begin the Beguine.

This composition, in the words of the composer, "is a variation and theme based upon the Porter classic with a surprise twist at the end." A soft introduction includes mechanical lines for piano and percussion and solos for oboe and flute. The tempo then increases as the piece explores a variety of textures, timbres, meters, and tempos, with interesting melodies and harmonies throughout. Two freely scored, unmetered passages highlight the final section before the piece cleverly ends with an actual recording of a music box.
