Program Notes

This bright fanfare is infused with energy, joy and a lively spirit. Based on the familiar English carol Joy to the World, this piece uses fragments of the tune to build two contrasting versions of the carol. The feeling of anticipation and prelude is carefully maintained as the melodic ideas unfold in new and unexpected ways. Thematic fragments intertwine and reinforce one another. Heroic fanfare statements rise above the ensemble. Augmentation juxtaposes diminution.
