Program Notes

Festspiel Ouverture was commissioned by the Festliche Musktage, Uster Switzerland, and was premiered by the Zuricher Blasorcheter, conducted by Albert Haberling, on the annual concert of the event on September 25th, 1985.

Following the form of the Italian baroque “Sinfonia” that later developed into the classic overture, the composer used this fast-slow-fast structure. Lendvay, a Kossuth Prize recipient, exhibits his great attraction to Igor Stravinsky’s unique rhythms and implied tonal centers.
