Program Notes

Fantasy on a Colonial Air was commissioned by the Lassiter High School Symphony Band, Alfred J. Watkins conductor, from Marietta, GA. It was premiered by this group on December 15, 1989 at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic with the composer conducting. The basis of the work is the William Billing's tune Chester. The opening measures, in cut time, uses only the first phrase of the tune accompanied by various repeated rhythms. At m. 63 is the first full occureence of the tune, voiced in the clarinet, alto saxophone, horn, and euphonium. Variations of this melody include a version in a fast 3/4 meter as well as in a slow 4/4. The opening material returns to bring the work to a close.
