Program Notes

Folk songs are an integral part of the concert band repertoire because of their immediate appeal and familiarity to students and audiences alike. Historically, many of our American composers, such as Grundman, Gould, Ives, Copland, and Chance, used folk songs in their compositions that became concert band favorites. Through Milburn's desire to introduce young musicians and audiences to the rich heritage of American folk music, he craftily combines Little Liza Jane, Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, All the Pretty Little Horses, and Sweet Betsy from Pike into an exciting composition that will leave charming imprints upon memory.
