Program Notes
Ralph Martino has composed extensively for many instrumental and vocal combinations. Fantasy for Tuba-Euphonium Quartet was featured at the 1990 T.U.B.A. International Tuba Conference at Sapporo, Japan by the U.S. Navy Band Tuba-Euphonium Quartet, for which this piece was written.
The opening is an allegro in 5/4 time with syncopations. It switches to 3/4 and 4/4 and has a very slow and rich center section with quarter note triplets that build in intensity to the tempo 1 which is now in 7/8. Highly accessible for both players and audience, Fantasy is a staple for this combination of low brass.
