Program Notes

The piece was designed as variations on the French folk song Frère Jacques. This song is chosen as a theme because it is well known all over the world and the melody is easy to play for young musicians. Students can learn typical styles of wind music through performing the piece.

The entire piece consists of six sections titled, Fanfare, Theme, March, Waltz, Chorale, and Finale. Additionally two other European folk songs, London Bridge Is Falling Down and O du lieber Augustin, which sound similar to Frère Jacques, are also employed in the piece.
