Program Notes
The piece is inspired on the Llanos Orientales (the Eastern plains, at the Orinoquía region between Colombia and Venezuela), calling to mind the beautiful landscapes, cattle raising, the mysticism and hard work of the llanero people. Ordoñez's piece brings the “golpe recio” to the symphony band format, that is, the fast and tough rhythmical pattern of the joropo music, and the performance of this type of music requires a high level of technical mastery.
The Fanfarria fanfare) works as a prelude that progressively evolves into a joropo. In a contrasting break, the piece presents a “tonada”, slow melody used for singing verses alluding to nature, the landscape, and the cattle-herding lifestyle of the Llanos. The piece ends with a pajarillo, a name given to a fast minor-key traditional joropo form used at parties.
