Program Notes

Fanfare and Fireworks is a dramatic concert opener or closer designed to be performed by concert band and strings; however, it can also be performed by concert band alone. Strings do not just double band parts - in fact, they are featured at times (and these parts are cued in the winds when necessary). By taking this approach, the textures and available colours are much richer and more diverse than a typical flexible instrumentation piece often allows. The result is an extremely vibrant and interesting harmonic vocabulary that sounds much more difficult to play than it actually is.

Fanfare and Fireworks was commissioned by the Parkland School District (Allentown, Pennsylvania) for their 5th Grade combined band and orchestra. The staff includes Patti Bartolacci and Laura Crouthamel (strings); Laura Kemmerer, Kay Mancke, and Mark Syslo (band); and Scott Watson (band/program coordinator). It was premiered by approximately 330 students (225 in band and 110 in strings).
