Program Notes

Fanfare: Sinfonia was commissioned by the Nu Zeta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha for the California State University, Stanislaus Wind Ensemble, Dr. Edward Harris, conductor.

Although the title refers to this piece as a fanfare, it could actually be described as a mini-overture, featuring contrasting harmonic and contrapuntal sections. The melody of this monothematic work is derived from the opening harmonies. This melody is realized harmonically in measure 48 and, in its final statement, appears chordally beginning at measure 54.

For the opening (ms. 1-13), extra players in the trumpet section (if there are any) should play the 4th Bb Trumpet part. After this opening, the players may switch back to their original parts, or continue playing the fourth part.
