Program Notes

Originating in the eighteenth century, the fandango is an animated couples dance in triple time. With bold melodic statements and strong rhythmic concentrations, Fandango Caliente (Spirited Dance) was inspired by the exotic namesake dance. By way of the highly spirited “caper” sections and the equally tender “interlude”, this intrepid work truly encapsulates the exuberance of the dance.

Commissioned by the Texas Music Educators Association Region 17 for the High School Honors Wind Ensemble, Fandango Caliente was premiered in January 2018 with the composer conducting.
