Program Notes

“Excellence in all we do,” one of the United States Air Force’s core values, is personalized in the writing and arranging of Master Sgt. Alan Baylock. As chief arranger of the Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force, Baylock’s mastery of jazz arranging and composition expresses itself in his incomparable technique, staggering virtuosity, and unquenchable desire to challenge and surprise.

Equipoise is the first original composition for the concert band by Baylock in his 16 years of service. The title, by definition a state of equilibrium, evokes the relationship of balance and counterbalance clearly evident in the complexity of jazz harmonies juxtaposed with soaring melodies and clever orchestration. The composition makes use of jazz harmony while maintaining the integrity of the concert band format in a manner accessible to bands of ranging abilities.

- Program note by Technical Sgts. David Balandrin and Ricky Parrell
