Program Notes
Anthony Holborne (1545-1602) was an English composer of the late Renaissance who served Elizabeth I as a court musician, composing for various instruments and voice and studying music theory.
Holborne published Pavans, Galliards, Almains and other short Aeirs, both grave and light, in five parts, for Viols, Violins or other Musicall Winde Instruments in 1599. The publication consisted of 65 pieces, mainly dance music and is one of the oldest consort music collections. I selected the following four pieces from the collection.
