Program Notes
This affecting composition is based on three traditional songs from the British Isles: May Day Carol; O Waly O Waly and The Ash Grove. Set in two movements, the first is a "Serenade" and the second is a lively "Jig." The traditional sound of the British wind band found in so many staples of the repertoire is in full force here.
- Program Note by publisher
This is a well-conceived, imaginative work featuring three English folk tunes. It opens with a delicately scored statement of May Day Carol, first in the woodwinds, then trumpets. More fully developed passages follow, leading to the first statement of O Waly Waly (The Water Is Wide). Some development follows, leading into The Ash Grove, featuring a variety of instruments playing the tune in a lively jig-like rhythm.
