Program Notes

The Third Sinfonietta, entitled El Misteri del Foc, is a very contrastive composition, a composition with a lot of effects, raging, melodic, mischievous, danzona …, many adjectives that contrast with each other to describe the three movements that make up this work.

Calixto III was born in the beautiful town of Canals. Alfonso de Borja, as he was called, had a meeting with Friar Vicente Ferrer, who predicted that he would become Pope and that one day he would be canonized and elevated to the altars as a saint. His attention as pontiff was focused on the reconquest of Constantinople, which had fallen into Turkish hands. For this he tried to organize a crusade. The victory did not prevent the crusade from being a failure.

Els Canals, the environment, the flow of water through the canals, the spirit of the festival leads us to the blessed fire, the feast of Sant Antoni, the blessing of the animals and the Festa dels Parells.

But the main emblem of the festival is the monumental bonfire, "la foguera de Sant Antoni". A monument of 20 m. high formed by about 600 tons of wood (mainly pine wood) that burns amid cheers that its citizens show to their patron saint. Around the bonfire everyone vibrates with passion for his feast, one of the most popular festivities of the Valencian tradition, the fire, and that in the town of "Canals" live it with a sincere enthusiasm.
