Program Notes

The best known work by Javaloyes is undoubtedly the pasodoble El Abonico, which he composed in Cartagena in 1910. The pasodoble was originally a military march, and El Abonico is still a much loved march for military bonds today, both in Spain and in other countries around the world.

- Program Note by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Banda Municipal de Música

This pasodoble was composed in 1910 while the composer was bandmaster of the 33rd Sevilla Regiment in Cartagena. The title refers to a popular café in Cartagena which had a large table built in the shape of a fan. At the beginning of this century, a number of artists, poets, novelists, intellectuals, and musicians (including the composer) reportedly gathered around the table daily for discussions and refreshments.
