Program Notes

The year 2021 marks the eightieth anniversary of The United States Air Force Band. From a few players stationed with Colonel Howard at Bolling Field at the beginning of World War II (1941), the band quickly bloomed into one of the finest military bands in the world. In the past eighty years, countless talented conductors, musicians, arrangers, and composers have passed through the ranks of this fine organization. The Air Force Band has a magnificent legacy.

Since the mid-'80s, it has been my honor and pleasure to have been invited to compose seven commissions for this incredibly talented group of players: Duo Concertante, Symphonic Overture (for the bands 50th Anniversary), Third Symphony, Dreamers, Wild Blue Yonder and most recently, Hope Arises and Dramatic Overture. It is always such a thrill to have the opportunity to write for this virtuosic band.

Dramatic Overture is a lively, celebratory piece commissioned to mark the 80th anniversary of the band. It begins with a stark, powerful introduction of the main theme by the trombones and percussion, soon joined by the other brass before the music moves into a dance-like allegro section. Dramatic brass statements, scampering woodwinds and long, soaring melodies dominate this allegro section until the band slows once again, to present a dramatic fanfare based on the basic intervals of the opening theme. The work then ends with a flashy, energetic coda.
