Program Notes
Down by the Salley Gardens is an Irish folk poem by William Butler Yeats, which was published in Crossways in 1889. Herbert Hughes set the words to music.
A "salley," or willow tree, was once common in gardens because people used the willow rods for basket making and for constructing thatch roofing of cottages. The Gaelic for "willow" is saileach, and the English usage of salley for willow tree may come from the Gaelic.
Down by the Salley Gardens
Down by the salley gardens, my love and I did meet;
She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leave grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.
In a field down by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.
