Program Notes
Before the war, Blacher was still involved in the professional life and with German military music. The Divertimento was premiered in Berlin on 24 February 1937. The conductor was Felix Husadel, a colleague of Blacher at the Hochschule fur Musik. The band was probably from the Luftwaffenmusikkorps, for at the time Husadel was music inspector for the German Air Force, which was one of very few groups to employ saxophones, instruments generally regarded by the Third Reich as symbols of Western decadence.
The lntrada is a simple rondo, looking back to the tower-music of seventeenth-century middle Europe; a canonic theme is stated on a solo trumpet and imitated by the rest of the orchestra, with a short contrasting phrase marked espressivo. The March is in typical ternary form, a swaggering, jaunty theme with a more lyrical trio section.
