Program Notes

I consider myself as much of a storyteller as my filmmaking counterparts and take heed while viewing films of lighting, pacing, cinematography, and – the element relating to Deified most – narrative structure.

One film that experimented with narrative was Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000), which moves forward in time (using black and white scenes) while also moving backward (using scenes in color). If one were to reedit the film, having each scene in reverse order, the story's structure would be the same – creating a palindrome. I became curious about palindromic narrative structure being adapted to a musical composition.

Deified, like Memento, comprises tqo narrative – one more rhythmic, the other, melodic. The piece alternative between th two in a pattern that allows the former to decay measure by measure as the latter comes to surface in the same way. The process is then reversed, completing the palindrom before having both narratives played simultaneously in the finale. The palindromic structure is composed onf 383 measures and has two temp markings – 151 and 131 beats per minute, all numbers being palindromes along with the title's spelling, D-E-I-F-I-E-D.
