David P Miller
Biography
David P. Miller (b. 1946, El Paso, Tex.) is an American composer, conductor, hornist and entrepreneur.
Mr. Miller received his BA and MA in music education from the University of Florida in 1968 and 1976, respectively. After several years of teaching high school band in Florida, he spent a career in the U.S. Air Force (ret. 1995) as a pilot (worldwide - Thailand, Okinawa, Alaska, California, Texas, Florida, Maine, England, and the Near East), then as an educator, then as a computer operations commander in Alabama and Mississippi.
During a "hiatus" from the Air Force, Mr. Miller served as director of bands for the P.K. Yonge Laboratory School of the University of Florida (1974-1976), and at Boca Raton High School in Florida (1976-1979). He also served as brass line instructor for the Florida Vanguards Drum & Bugle Corps during their first year of open competition in 1980.
He composed and arranged many works for band during his years as a band director, and in the USAF, but never served in a music organization of the USAF. During his tenure as Director of Information Systems for the Community College of the Air Force, he won the Air Force Achievement Medal for his original "CCAF Graduation March," now played worldwide for CCAF graduations.
He has served as principal horn for the University of Florida Symphonic Band, The UF Symphony Orchestra, The Boca Raton Symphonic Pops, the Gulf Coast (MS) Wind Symphony, The Mississippi Baptist Symphony Orchestra, and several church orchestras.
He has guest conducted a number of school bands, university bands, community bands, and choirs, and has traveled extensively to consult with community bands on how to function more effectively and to build their audience. He has written an ebook, "How To Grow Your Audience to Overflowing" which is currently available for free from the Association of Concert Bands website.
In 2004 Mr. Miller founded the Mississippi Community Symphonic Band, a group which he continues to conduct.
He also formed Silver Clef Music in 1998 to publish music primarily for community bands, and he established David Miller Web Designs for website development.
