Program Notes

I recently began listening to a wonderful podcast from Aaron Mahnke entitled Lore, in which he tells stories of fascinating creatures and otherworldly beings from around the globe. While ghost stories and criminals from days past certainly are interesting, I find that the best stories often involve cryptids, or creatures whose existence has yet to be proven. I couldn’t quite rid myself of the feeling that there was so much to explore musically with some of my favorites. So, after a brief respite to compose some smaller works and tie up some unfinished projects directly post-graduation, I found myself sketching melodies and motives for some of my favorite creatures. A whole section is devoted to each of the following:

  1. The Banshee
  2. The Selkie
  3. The Plague Maiden (or The Pesta)
  4. The Siren
  5. The Kraken
  6. The Revenant

Each creature has unique motivic elements, but they are all connected in minor ways. The piece is in (mostly) rondo form, with every section containing a different piece of the original melodic material.
