Program Notes

This march was composed in 1905 by Henry Fillmore (1881-1956) under the pseudonym Al Hayes, one of several names he used during his lifetime. This traditional march is cast in cut time, marked simply “March tempo” and follows well-established march convention modulating from Eb major to Ab major at the trio. Fillmore’s gift for creating interesting melodies and countermelodies is on full display.

- Program Note from The Instrumentalist

Al Hayes was one of seven pseudonyms used by famous march composer Henry Fillmore. Fillmore became so popular and was so prolific in the early part of the 20th century that he had to resort to pennames as to not compete with himself. This is yet another tuneful, well-written march by Fillmore that has been given new life in this setting by arranger Laurie Lafferty.
