Program Notes

Le Prophète ("The Prophet") is a grand opera in five acts by Giacomo Meyerbeer. The plot is based on the life of John of Leiden, Anabaptist leader and self-proclaimed "King of Münster" in the 16th century.

The Coronation March marking the accession of the prophet Jean de Leyde's takes place in Act IV in Münster Cathedral, where Layde accepts the crown, the scepter, the sword of justice, and the seal of the State. A band, consisting of 18 saxhorns, two cornets, two trumpets, and four military drum, appears on stage for the coronation.
