Program Notes

Having the right attitude can help anyone accomplish great things. I know some students face great obstacles with family, health or economic issues and need a strong spirit to reach their goals. I wanted to write a piece that would be upbeat, strong and inspiring in honor of those students.

In this composition, I tried to begin with a vigorous fanfare that has lots of energy but would not be too difficult to perform. The piece then settles into a light dance melody that features the saxophone in an unusual 9/8-2/4 meter that is fun for students. Other simple melodies are layered and culminate in the return of the fanfare section.

I hope this bright, energetic work will be fun for your students and your audiences.
