This work was commissioned by and dedicated to James Galway. It received its premier on 6 November 1992 by the St. Louis Symphony, Leonard Slatkin, conducting, with Galway as soloist.

Concerto for Flute was awarded the Best Newly Published Flute Work award by the National Flute Society in 1994.
