Program Notes

The chorale and allegro is a form Smith used frequently. Instead of a fast-slow-fast form, Smith uses slow-fast-slow. Opening with a velvet chorale played by the brass and enlarged upon by adding the woodwinds, it is accompanied by the subtle rhythms of the percussion. The theme of the allegro section is assisted by pulsating rhythms and the composition becomes fully developed as the chorale, the allegro theme and all accompanying figures are joined together to bring the piece to an exuberant conclusion.
