Program Notes

Celestial Legend uses thematic material based on Follow the Drinking Gourd and The Church's One Foundation. The piece seeks to recognize Green County, Ohio, for its role in the Underground Railroad Movement, when escaping slaves were taught to follow the North Star.

A delicate opening moves into a frenzy of woodwind activity over powerful brass fanfares. After a brief lyrical section, the piece resumes its fire, erupting in celebration as it catapults toward its heroic ending.
