Program Notes

Cathedral Grove is a magnificent park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, containing some of the oldest and largest trees in the world. It is the towering, majestic pillars of these ancient giants and the quiet serenity of this place that inspired this music.

Cathedral Grove opens with a lyrical theme depicting the richness of the colours and the textures and the diffused light shining through the canopy above. This is followed by a chorale, reflecting the mystical quality of being in this sacred place. This prayer-like melody moves back and forth between the brass and woodwinds. This leads to a restatement of the lyrical theme, this time in the woodwinds, building to a rich brass chorale with a woodwind counter melody. The piece ends quietly and reverently - an homage to this wondrous place.
