Carl Hammer
Biography
Carl Hammer (b. 1966, Santa Monica, Calif.) is an American composer and arranger.
Dr. Hammer began studying piano with his grandmother when he was five, and he continues to perform on the piano and pipe organ. He began trombone the summer before fourth grade, because trombones were always in front of marching bands. Influential music teachers were Lida Beasley at John Adams Junior High School and Jim Hile at Santa Monica High School.
Hammer completed his BMA in music education at Brigham Young University under the supervision of Dr. Don L. Peterson, and continued his trombone studies with Daniel Bachelder. His MM and DMA in trombone performance were gained at the University of Southern California under the instruction of Dr. Terry Cravens. He served as associate band director at Santa Monica High School from 1995 to 2004 as well as at Santa Monica College, and has been a freelance composer, arranger and marching drill designer since.
